Why are Spanish speaking countries poor and corrupt?

I want to be blunt, and I would like some answers...

Frankly, I would like to be given the reasons why every Spanish speaking country in the world is a poor nation that qualifies as a 3rd world country? Besides Spain, every other country is 3rd world. Is that a co-incidence, or are these countries founders and the infrastructure so historically corrupt that they can never be 1st world?

Certainly, it can't be because the Spanish speaking populace can't create wealth? I won't buy that one.

Consider... Every country from Mexico down south to the tip of Argentina which includes 16 spanish speaking countries, excluding Carribbean Island Nations like Cuba and Dominican Republic. Every single one qualifies as a poverty stricken country, most if not all, with corrupt Governments and Police Forces at the helm.
These poor citizens exist in a class system that has no middle ground. You are either extremely wealthy or exceedingly poor.

All these countries which were at first colonized by the Spanish during their global expansion 400 years ago, have received their own independance and have been free to govern themselves for over a 100 years now. Yet none have been able to feed or protect their citizens from this impoverished lifecycle, or give them the basic freedoms that we enjoy and take for granted. Spain itself is a little better than these countries being situated in Europe, but it is still a poverty striken country, especially by European standards.

Why is this? Is it just a co-incidence, or is there an underlying reason why Spanish speaking countries cannot support their people? Certainly, they are placed in beautiful tourist thriving countries and all have some sort of export that is needed in the world. It can't be said that ALL these countries have no education system, and free thinking youth to become the new generation business leaders to move their country out of a 400 year drought, can it?

So I would like to know why EVERY single spanish speaking country is filled with corrupt govenment, dirty cops, drug lords, slum shanty towns, extreme poverty for 95% of its population, and why nobody I know has ever even bothered to bring it up?

Please let me know your thoughts and theories....and please be candid.

  3. Lol same guy wrote the last two posts judging by the same overuse of ... and amazing grammar. Apparently, it took about 26 mins to write that second piece of work. He forgets to mention Spain's financial crisis of epic proportions. Also talking about bad neighbors, Spain is bringing down everyone who is currently using the Euro and also bringing down everyone who they borrowed money from (which include many of their neighbors as well as many other countries world wide) because they can't pay anyone back.

  4. Your article is biased, and misinformed, especially when it comes to the situation of Spain. While it is true that the country is going through difficult times, it is not true that “Spain itself is a little better than these countries being situated in Europe, but it is still a poverty stricken country, especially by European standards”. Again, it is true that there are serious problems due to its real estate bubble and the circumstances of one its bigger banks (keep in mind that the other banks in Spain are among the best debt rated banks in Europe, including Santander, the largest bank in the Eurozone), but the country has not borrowed money (the BANKS have borrowed 39.465 million, and so have rescued banks by other means the US, Iceland and Germany) nor has it been bailed-out; and it is far from real asserting that poverty is a reality in Spain or that Spain is, by any standard, a poor country.

    Now some data for you:

    The Economist Intelligence Unit’s quality-of-life index, 2005: Ireland (1st), Switzerland (2nd), Spain (10th), USA (13th), France (25th), Germany (26th), United Kingdom (29th) , Mexico (32nd), Zimbabwe (111th).

Human Development Index, 2013 [only list developed countries]: Norway (1st), Australia (2nd), USA (3rd), Switzerland (7th), Germany (9th), France (20th), Spain (23rd), Italy (25th), United Kingdom (27th), Hungary (37th), Argentina (45th)

    GDP (nominal) 2012, International Monetary Fund: USA (1st), China (2nd), Germany (4th), France (5th), Brazil (6th), Italy (8th), Russia (9th), Spain (13th), South Korea (16th), Netherlands (18th), Switzerland (20th), Greece (42nd), Dominica (180th).

    Legatum Prosperity Index 2012: Norway (1st), Australia (2nd), Switzerland (9th), USA (12th), United Kingdom (13th), Germany (14th), France (21st), Japan (22nd), Spain (23rd), South Korea (27th), Sudan (100th), Pakistan (109th)

    Inequality-adjusted human development index (IHDI), 2012: Norway (1st), Australia (2nd), Germany (5th), Switzerland (7th), Canada (13th), USA (16th), France (18th), UK (19th), Spain (20th), Israel (21st), Italy (24th), South Korea (28th), Chile (41st), Mexico (55th), Niger (131st).

Before making some assertions you must read more (or go back to school), even if it is only to know that it should be written “poverty-stricken” and not “striken”.

  6. To say that spanish speaking countries are poor is true is a big mistake. American spanish speaking countries are well more developed than afrika.
Why Spain is richer? Education, liberal-economy, developed country etc...
The industrial revolution is divided in three economic levels.
The first world was is on the third economy level. (developed countries)
The second world is on the second economy level. (emerging countries)
The third world is on the first economy level. (poor countries)

  7. Give it a rest..Spain and all Spanish speaking countries are relatively poor..the salaries are extremely low..even in Spain. The unemployment is 27% and over 50% for those under 25 years of age...no incentive to learn Spanish. English, French or German as these countries are well off.

    1. extremely low salaries?? Sorry, you dont know nothing about spain. The same as you dont no nothing about what happen in European Union.
In spain, the media of unemployment is 27% but there is even differences in the regions. While in northern spain the unemployment is no more than 15% in southern spain is in 40%.
But there are two causes about this problem.
One, while in the northern spain is richer is because is more developed, with industry and technological companies on the south the socialists destroyed even what the industry make it by Franco and the only thing that was the southern spains economy was the construction and the late introduce about renewable energy.
With Crisis, the boom of construction and reduce of the investments in renewable energy has sunk the southern spain totally.
Second, The spanish government cant do any investment to create jobs or simplify to made it. Why? Because Merkel has bound Rajoy to worry principally in paying debt. That provocked the increase of the taxes and the sinking to the small companies. With no posibilities to do any policy to reduce unemployment, Rajoy decided to do a labour reform in order to promote temporary contracts and facilitary to dismiss employees. That benefit companies to make this kind of contracts that arent bound to put above minimum salaries.
Thats why spain is sinking. Because its in german hands because is in the Eurozone. If the Eurozone decide to change the policy spain will recovery from the crisis.
Thanks that you have other currency apart form Euro that saves you.

  8. Timing-wise, with crude prices as they are and the Spanish economy as it is, it would be good for Texas to revisit the idea of purchasing Spain.

  9. I think it is very funny the only thing commentors want to talk about is Spain's GDP when he clearly said every spanish speaking country BESIDES SPAIN. Im not saying I agree with the author but apparently he is correct if the only argument you attempt to bring against him doesnt even apply to what he is talking about.

  13. The problem in Spanish speaking countries is an inheritance from Spain centuries ago in how the country is run, its laws and 15th century politics. To impose a 21% sales tax on a country that is broke is no way to assist in a financial recovery, It is this type of political thinking that holds Spain back. It needs a new political party of the 21st century.

Spain's education system does not rate in the worlds top 20 and its universities are not in the top 200.

Spain needs to assert itself before it can help other Spanish speaking countries. Corruption starts in Spain, so it is not surprising that it is in other Spanish speaking countries.

In my opinion all Spanish speaking people are hard workers and need good government to help them,

  14. I believe it's part of colonization. The U.S. claimed independence during an age of religious reform embraced by colonists and not accepted by Europeans; therefore, the U.S. created the best government system. Other latin american countries followed but weren't involved or perhaps weren't educated to form an efficient system like the U.S. Also whether a country does well or not doesn't depend on how old they are; for example, india and new Zealand. It all depends on attitude and sadly I have seen complacency and no ambition within my people. In my opinion, whether a country does well or not also depends on religion since religion founds certain behaviors, morals and work ethic. Americans and Canadians have been blessed with a great positive work ethic while latin american nations have not. In latin american countries time is more important than money while in developed North American countries money is more important than time.
